The Story You Tell Is the Life You Live

The stories we tell ourselves shape the way we experience life. They can lift us up, or they can keep us stuck. Most of the time, we don’t even realize how often we’re repeating the same words, thoughts, and beliefs—until those words start writing the script of our reality.
After a chiropractic injury, I spent months in pain that eventually led to neck surgery. In recovery, I caught myself saying the same phrase again and again: “My neck hurts.” I repeated it so often that it blended together into one word—myneckhurts. That phrase became more than just a description. It became my story. My identity. My truth.
But here’s what I discovered: the story we repeat doesn’t have to be the story we keep.
One day, I decided to change my words. Instead of saying, “My neck hurts,” I started to declare, “My neck feels great!” At first, it felt silly—even untrue. But the more I said it, the more my mind softened to the possibility. My body began to shift, too. Bit by bit, I felt improvement. My healing accelerated the moment I stopped repeating the old story and started speaking a new one.
Our words carry energy. When we change the story, we change the way our body, mind, and heart respond. It doesn’t mean pretending life is perfect—it means choosing to tell a story that opens the door for healing, growth, and possibility.
So, ask yourself:
What story have you been repeating? And what small shift in your words could begin to rewrite it?
Because when you shift the story, you shift the outcome.
Reflection Prompt
Take one phrase you often repeat about yourself, your health, or your life. Write it down. Then, rewrite it into a new story that supports your healing, growth, or joy. Speak it out loud this week and notice how it feels.
